Wide stone with oval flanked by two astragals curving down on the shoulders; there grooves forming a border round the entire edge; from line 7 to the end in italics; the surface mottled but the inscription clear
Sacred to the memory of John DEAN, who died at Hemsted in this parish April 12th A.D. 1809 aged 57 years. He lived in the service of Thomas Hallett HODGES, Esqr and of his son nearly thirty four years, and by his integrity and fidelity justified the confidence reposed in him. This stone was erected by Thomas Law Hodges, Esqr to record his esteem for an old and faithful servant.
